Taking Action for Gender Equality
At HUMIFORM we know that taking action on the issues you care about during a pandemic can be challenging. So over the next few months, we’re going to be sharing some resources to help you learn more and take action on these different issues. First up - gender equality!
TAKING ACTION
🗣 CONVERSATIONS…
Conversations are such a powerful tool in taking action. They challenge the way we think, help us reflect on our values and beliefs and encourage growth and education.
Here are a few ways you can address gender equality through conversations:
Challenging gendered language in everyday conversations
Taking time to explain intersectional feminism. If you’re not sure what intersectional feminism is, don’t worry you’re not alone. This video explains it well.
If you’re on social media, putting your pronouns in your biography is a really small but effective way of normalising sharing pronouns
🌏 SUPPORT ORGANISATIONS WORKING FOR CHANGE…
Joining an organisation allows you to connect with likeminded people, discuss ideas and take larger actions as a group of change makers. Below is a list of a few organisations that focus on moving the needle on gender equality.
*Parental supervision recommended for people under the age of 15
✏️ PETITIONS…
What She Makes - The women making our clothes often don’t earn enough to lift themselves out of poverty. This petition demands that brands pay their workers a living wage.
Free Nassima al-Sada - Nassima is in prison for her work defending women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, this petition demands her freedom.
💚 EDUCATION…
As a change maker, it is so important to be constantly learning about the area you’re passionate about. Becoming more knowledgeable about an issue allows you to educate those around you and take more direct and efficient action. There are lots of ways you can do this, we’ve shared a few here:
Watch documentaries and videos (see below)
Read books written by and about feminism, women in power, gender diversity, intersectionality
Read books written by women and non-binary authors
Fill your social media feed with women, people of colour and gender diverse people
Ask your teachers to incorporate more gender resources into the classroom and library
You can also explore how gender equal your classroom is by running through the following checklist of questions:
How many of the books that you’re studying are written by female authors?
How many of the historical figures you’re studying are women, people of colour or gender non-binary?
Are your textbooks using gendered language?
Are the resources you’re using enforcing gender stereotypes?
Do you know everyone’s pronouns in your class?
Are your teachers and classmates using gendered language?
Under the ‘gender’ section of surveys and forms you fill out, is there a gender non-binary option?
In sport, are they splitting you into gendered teams?
Are girls and non-binary folk being encouraged to study subjects like math, science and physical education?
Are boys and non-binary folk being encouraged to study subjects like art, music and drama?
